Thanks to wins in its last two games, the Canisius College men's lacrosse team heads to the 2012 MAAC Championship as the No. 3 seed. The Griffs open the tournament in the semifinals against second-seeded Detroit on Friday with faceoff set for 4:30 p.m.

MAAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
• The Griffs are making their sixth trip to the MAAC Tournament and their first trip since winning the title in 2008.
• Canisius eased past Manhattan and VMI by a total score of 25-7 in its 2008 title run - the first championship in the program's history.
• Overall, the Griffs are 2-4 all-time in the MAAC Tournament, which includes a 2-2 record as the higher-seeded team and a 0-2 mark as the lower-seeded team.
• Canisius has never met Siena, Marist or Detroit in a postseason contest.

ADVANTAGE GRIFFS ON THE TIEBREAKER
• Canisius finished the 2012 season in a four-way tie for second place in the MAAC standings, resulting in one of the tied teams missing out on the MAAC Tournament.
• For once, that team was not Canisius. The Griffs missed out on the conference tournament in each of the last two seasons thanks to a tiebreaker. Canisius earned a spot in the 2012 campaign on goals allowed in games between Jacksonville and Marist.
• The 2010 tiebreaker was especially hard to stomach for Canisius. The Griffs finished in a three-way tie for third only to be eliminated by a coin flip after going through all tiebreakers.
• New tiebreakers were put in after the 2010 season. If not, a coin flip would have again been the result to break a tie between Canisius, Jacksonville and Marist.

A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME???
• One win down for the Griffs in Poughkeepsie, two to go for a title.
• Needing a win to earn a bid in the MAAC Tournament in their season finale, the Griffs did something that no Canisius team had accomplished in 20 years - win at Marist.
• The Griffs clinched the MAAC Tournament bid with a 7-5 win on Saturday. It marked Canisius' first win in Poughkeepsie since 1992, ending an eight-game losing streak at Marist.
• Current Canisius head coach Randy Mearns was in his senior season the last time the Griffs won in Poughkeepsie.

CALLAHAN NAMED MAAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Senior netminder Sean Callahan is entering the MAAC Tournament on a high.
• Callahan earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday after anchoring the Canisius defense to the win. He recorded 11 saves on 16 shots on goal for the victory.
• Canisius entered its game at Marist knowing that the Griffs would qualify for the MAAC Tournament with a win and allowing seven or fewer goals. The senior did two better.
• Callahan was especially key late. He allowed only one goal in 41-minutes after the Red Foxes tied the game at three, including a 29:06 scoreless streak as Canisius built a 6-3 lead.
• Overall, Callahan has posted an 11.23 goals against average and .479 save percentage.

SENIORS GOING OUT IN STYLE
• Sean Callahan was one of just a number of Canisius seniors determine to qualify for the MAAC Tournament before graduating.
• The Griffs missed out on the conference tournament in each of the seniors' first three campaigns but in addition to Callahan's 11 saves, the seniors scored five of the team's seven goals and registered four of the team's five assists in the win over Marist.
• Overall, the senior class has accounted for 77.7 percent (73-94) of the team's goals in 2012 and 70.1 percent of the team's points (108-154).

X-FACTOR
• Junior Mike Moran was also just as important as a factor in the Griffs' 7-5 win over Marist.
• Moran won 14-of-16 faceoffs in the winning effort for 87.5 percent. He posted the highest winning percentage by a Griff (minimum 12 faceoffs) since Mark Miyashita won 18-of-19 restarts (94.7 percent) against Marist in 2003.
• Overall, Moran has been the main weapon at the faceoff X for the Griffs this season, winning 50.3 percent of his restarts (76-151).
