CEDAR CITY, Utah - March 10 - Southern Utah University softball recorded its third run-rule victory of the weekend, sweeping Oakland University with a 10-2 victory in six innings. The result moves the T-Birds to 13-8 and 3-0 in conference play.
SUU scored runs in every inning but the fifth, opening the game with two runs in the first on an Oakland error and an RBI double off the bat of Kadi Henderson. Three runs crossed the plate in the second on a three-run home run by Kelsey Bryant as the Canadian brought her team-leading RBI total to 20 on the year.
Madison Resley opened the third inning with a single and Kylee Schmitke advanced to second on a wild pitch after coming in as a pinch runner. Haylee Hoch then came to the plate and blasted an RBI double to the gap in right center, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch the play into a triple.
Another three-run home run in the fourth inning, this time tallied by Henderson, put the Thunderbirds up 9-2 with Oakland having scored its runs on a pair of double steals in the second and third.
Southern Utah's punctuating run came in the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and Katie Olinger at the plate. The junior came through with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Terysa Dyer on third.
Heather Black earned her third victory of the weekend, throwing 4.0 innings where she allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts. Danielle Axe finished the final two innings for the T-Birds, allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
Southern Utah will continue conference play next weekend when the Thunderbirds host South Dakota at Kathryn Berg Field. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at Noon on Friday with the series finale on Saturday.
