CEDAR CITY, Utah - Feb. 28 - Southern Utah University will look to continue its pursuit of an NCAA regional berth when the Thunderbirds travel to Auburn University this weekend.
SUU will enter the meet having scored its third highest mark of the year last weekend, finishing a close second at BYU with a 193.925. The Thunderbirds benefited from the return of seniors Brooke Cersosimo and Lauren Jeffrey to multiple lineups during the meet as the duo had been limited to the uneven bars because of lingering ankle injuries.
Ankle injuries have also hampered junior all-arounders Alyssa Click and Michaela Chernoch, but the tandem also returned to bar lineups last week and could appear in more rotations this weekend.
“It will be great to potentially have those four back in the lineups this weekend,” head coach Scott Bauman said. “Auburn is a great team that competes in the SEC. We will just need to go down there and hit our routines and I think we’ll do just fine.”
Southern Utah is currently No. 41 in the nation with teams now being sorted by a regional qualifying score which is totaled by taking three road scores, the next three top marks from the season, throwing out the highest score and then averaging the remaining five scores. The Thunderbirds need to finish as one of the top 36 teams in the nation to earn an NCAA regional berth and will need to score at least in the high 193’s or mid 194’s to clinch a spot at the end of the year.
The meet on Friday is scheduled to begin at 6:00 (MT) with live stats anticipated to be available online at www.suutbirds.com. Fans can also go to www.auburntigers.com to watch the meet via a video stream for a fee.
