CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University will face its third in-state opponent this weekend when the Thunderbirds host the Weber State Wildcats in a Big Sky preview.
Southern Utah will enter the series on a two-game winning streak after sweeping the Utah State Aggies last weekend. Overall the Thunderbirds are 4-6 on the year with additional victories over Western Kentucky and North Dakota.
SUU has averaged a .271 clip from the plate this season, but are led by a duo of .400-plus hitters, including Kadi Henderson and Mikkel Griffin with a .448 and .429 average, respectively. The tandem lead the team in hits with 13 and 12 and total bases with 20 and 16, respectively.
Heather Black has headlined the Thunderbirds bullpen, leading the team in innings pitched (37.2), wins (four) and strikeouts (26). As a unit, Southern Utah carries an ERA of 3.82 with 40 total strikeouts.
The games this weekend will provide Southern Utah fans a preview of what is awaiting the Thunderbirds in the Big Sky Conference when SUU joins the league in 2012-13. SUU has already faced one future Big Sky opponent in North Dakota, splitting games with the Fighting Sioux (4-1 and 1-6).
SUU and Weber will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled at Noon with a single game set for Sunday also at Noon. All three games are planned to be played at Kathryn Berg Field, but may be moved to St. George if inclement weather in Cedar City forces a change in venue.
