SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Feb. 3 - Southern Utah University gymnastics had a lead going into the final rotation, but a pair of falls for the T-Birds on beam opened the door to a Sacramento State victory as SUU dropped the meet 193.725 to 192.800 on Friday night.

The Thunderbirds fought back from miscues in the opening rotation as seniors Brooke Cersosimo and Lauren Jeffrey fell during their bar sets, forcing the team to count a fall with a final team score of 47.800. Alyssa Click led Southern Utah on the apparatus with a 9.775, finishing second overall on the event with Michaela Chernoch finishing fourth with a 9.700. Freshmen Rochelle Bernier and Jamie Armijo rounded out the team score with a 9.625 and 9.600.

The Hornets began the night on vault, scoring a 48.550 to take an early lead, but fell behind following the second rotation after having to count a fall of their own on bars.

Southern Utah capitalized on the falls used a 6-for-6 performance on vault, including first-place 9.775's by Bernier and Chernoch, to notch a team score of 48.700. The Thunderbirds counted nothing less that a 9.700 as Caitlin Kennedy (9.750), Cersosimo (9.700) and Armijo (9.700) completed the team total.

SUU jumped in front after the second rotation with a team total of 96.500 to Sacramento State's 96.275 as the Hornets finished with a 47.725 on bars.

Southern Utah opened the third rotation with a 9.750 from Jaworski on floor, but her routine was followed by one of the scarier moments of the meet as Chernoch rolled an ankle during her first tumbling pass and was unable to continue her routine. The next three gymnasts didn't show any signs of being rattled after the fall as Jensen, Click and Kennedy tallied a 9.850, 9.825 and 9.850, respectively. Bernier's 9.400 during the final routine gave the T-Birds a 48.675 on the event.

SUU's lead going into the final rotation grew to five-tenths (145.175-144.675) with the Hornets scoring a 48.400 on beam.

Southern Utah opened its beam rotation going 4-for-4 with Click leading the way with a first-place mark of 9.850. Kennedy was close behind in second place with a 9.775, giving her nothing lower than a 9.750 during the meet. However, falls from the final two Thunderbird gymnasts coupled with a 49.050 by the Hornets on floor gave Sacramento State the 193.725 to 192.800 victory.

Southern Utah's loss to the Hornets was the first since the 2008 season and snapped a three-meet Thunderbird winning streak against Sacramento State.

SUU will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as the T-Birds remain in California and compete against San Jose State. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. (PST) with live stats and a real-time blog anticipated to be available online at
