RALEIGH, North Carolina - TJ Pecoraro struck out eight and allowed two runs on six hits as Vanderbilt topped UNCW, 8-2, in game one of the Raleigh Regional of the NCAA Baseball Championship on Friday.
The Seahawks (38-22) will play at 2 p.m. on Saturday against the loser of the NC State/Sacred Heart game being played tonight. The Commodores (34-26), who played in the 2011 College World Series, will face the winner at 7 p.m.
Pecoraro (2-4) went 7 2/3 innings in picking up his second win of the season. After allowing two hits in the second, he settled down and retired 13 of the next 14 hitters before allowing a one-out single to Hunter Ridge in the seventh. His eight strikeouts tied a season high.
Ridge led UNCW with a game-high three hits while Thomas Pope slammed his fifth homer of the season to end Pecoraro's shutout bid in the seventh.
VU scored the game's first eight runs, including a four spot in the fourth against losing pitcher Tyler McSwain (9-4). Riley Reynolds' leadoff double was the inning's lone hit as McSwain walked three and VU swiped five bases.
McSwain lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on seven hits.
Anthony Gomez's two-run single through a drawn-in infield in the sixth off reliever Tom Timoney capped the scoring for the Commodores. Gomez, Reynolds and Mike Yastrzemski each had two hits to pace the VU lineup.
Notes: The Seahawk bullpen allowed just one hit over the final 4 1/3 innings ... Hunter Ridge moved into fourth all-time at UNCW with 240 hits ... Andrew Cain (199) needs one more hit for 200 in his career ... Today was McSwain shortest start of the season and shortest since 2011 (George Mason, 2IP) ... UNCW lost its opening game of a regional for the third time in five outings ... It was the first meeting between Vanderbilt and UNCW ... The Seahawks are now 2-2 vs SEC members in NCAA play.
