CLEMSON, S.C. – UNC Asheville won the first set, but USC Upstate rallied to win the next three sets as the Spartans defeated the Bulldog volleyball, 3-1 in the first match of the Big Orange Bash at Clemson Friday afternoon. USC Upstate won, 20-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-19.


The Bulldogs (0-1) were led by Shelby Erickson’s first career double-double as she had 12 kills and 13 digs. Christine Lakatos added 10 kills and 13 digs. Setter Katie Davis had 31 assists and nine kills.


Asheville jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never trailed in winning the opening set, 25-20. The next two sets were nip-and-tuck and could have gone either way, but the Spartans got some key service aces and kills to jump out to a 2-1 lead. The third set saw 11 lead changes.


The Bulldogs will play again on Friday against Troy at 5 p.m. They’ll finish the tournament tomorrow afternoon against Clemson at 1 p.m.
