ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s and women’s cross country teams begin the 2014 season at the Western Carolina Invitational Friday evening.

The women’s two-mile race will start at 6:30 p.m., while the men’s 5K race is scheduled to start around 6:50 p.m.

Both Florida teams are scheduled to participate in the meet along with Georgia State, Gardner-Webb, North Carolina A&T, Western Carolina, Wofford and Piedmont College.

“We’re excited about the start of the season,” declared Bulldog coach Jesse Norman. “We’ve worked hard in the preseason and now it’s time to see where we are at this point.

“Florida will be a great test for all of us as both of its teams are ranked nationally,” added Norman. “We’ll have great competition from all of the teams that will be there.”

Norman looks for the Bulldog harriers to get better with each meet.

“We want to improve from one meet to the next and do our best running at the Big South Conference championships in November,” stated Norman. “I like the depth we have in both teams, and we have a chance to have solid seasons with both clubs.”

Both Bulldog teams are excited about the UNC Asheville Cross Country Carnival scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20 at Asheville Christian Academy. For the third straight year, the Bulldog harriers will have a home meet that their fans can come out and watch them run.
