More Than 7,000 Athletes Set To Compete At 2012 Drake Relays
DES MOINES, Iowa- Des Moines will play host to more than 7,000 track and field athletes as they descend on Iowa's capitol to compete in the 103rd running of the Drake Relays. America's Athletic Classic gets underway today with competition in the decathlon and heptathlon taking place, as well as the Pole Vault in the Mall at Jordan Creek Town Center at 6:15 p.m.
The decathlon and heptathlon continue on Thursday, while a number of other track and field events begin competition and the 12th annual Distance Carnival will take place Thursday evening.
Colleges and universities from all over the United States will take part in the 102nd running of the Drake Relays. There will be 125 men's university-college teams with 1,450 athletes competing. On the women's side, 131 teams with 1,289 athletes will compete.
In the high school boys division, 631 athletes have entered the Drake Relays from 141 schools. In the high school girls division, 136 teams are sending 589 athletes. There will also be 452 grade school and middle school athletes representing 57 teams from the greater Des Moines area.
There also will be 145 unattached athletes competing, 89 men and 56 women.
The road race event will also draw an estimated 2,500 runners to the Drake Relays.
Overall, the Drake Relays will have an estimated 7,056 athletes competing during the three-day meet.
