MEN'S BASKETBALL: SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 107, NORTHERN STATE 101 [2 OT]
South Dakota State and Northern State had not played in men's basketball in 15 years, but the resumption of the in-state rivalry got off to a rousing start on Dec. 7, 1993, when the Jackrabbits recorded a 107-101 double-overtime victory before a crowd of 5,785 at Frost Arena.
First-year coach Brad Soderberg's Jackrabbit squad clicked offensively early as SDSU scored the first seven points of the game. The Jackrabbits led 19-10 before the Wolves responded to knot the game at 23-all and again at 27. However, SDSU had the last run of the first half, starting with back-to-back three-pointers by Tom Rops and Juriad Hughes. Three more three-pointers by three different players in the final four minutes of the half gave the Jackrabbits a 50-37 lead at intermission.
Northern State battled back in the second half, taking its first lead of the game at 74-73 on two free throws by Chad McGough with six minutes to play. The lead would change six more times and the game would be tied two more times as the Jackrabbits made three free throws in the final 1:24 of regulation to send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Jackrabbits recovered to take a 93-88 lead on a Rops basket with 2:13 to play, but SDSU would go scoreless the remainder of the extra session. Eric Klein's three-pointer, followed by two Scott Boekelheide free throws knotted the game at 93-all to send the contest into a second overtime.
Sophomore guard Jermaine Showers came up big for SDSU in the second overtime, opening the scoring with a three pointer. A three-pointer by Rops put the Jackrabbits up by six, 99-93, and Showers scored five of the final seven Jackrabbit points to seal the victory.
Showers ended the night with a career-high 27 points to lead all scorers. A combined 10 players reached double figures, including all five Jackrabbit starters, with Rops and Cory VandeWettering each tallying 21 for SDSU, followed by 16 from Hughes and 14 from Troy Bouman. VandeWettering, Rops and Bouman each completed double-doubles with 14, 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Kevin Burckhard led Northern with 25 points along with 11 rebounds, while Kline tallied 21. Lance Luitjens scored 17 points with Paul Sather adding 15 points and 14 rebounds. McGough chipped in with 14 points and 12 boards off the bench.
SDSU finished the night 35-of-84 from the field, 41.6 percent, including 13-of-27 from three-point range. The Jackrabbits converted 24-of-32 attempts at the line, 75 percent.
The Wolves made 38-of-88 field goal attempts, 43.1 percent, but were only 4-of-21 from three-point range. NSU made 21-of-23 free throw attempts, 91.3 percent.
The two squads combined for only 24 turnovers - 13 by SDSU and 11 by the Wolves - in the 50-minute contest.
