Jackrabbits drop home opener
South Dakota State fell behind early in its women's basketball home opener Wednesday night and Creighton answered every Jackrabbit run en route to a 63-54 victory at Frost Arena.
The Bluejays improved to 1-1 with the road victory. SDSU dropped to 1-2 overall.
South Dakota State led in the opening minutes of the game, taking a 5-2 lead on a basket by Leah Dietel. Creighton gained the advantage for good with a 11-0 run to take a 13-5 lead.
SDSU trimmed the margin back to a basket, 13-11, by reeling off the next six points, but the Bluejays again responded to go up by double digits late in the half on a basket by Mackenzie Fujan. Creighton led 27-19 at the half.
The Jackrabbits opened the second half with a 10-5 spurt to pull to within 32-29 four minutes into the second half. Creighton again gradually pulled away, taking its largest lead of the night, 48-36, on a layup by Sarah Nelson.
After switching to a 2-1-2 zone, the Jackrabbits put together one last comeback bid, closing to within 50-46 with 5 minutes, 43 seconds remaining on two free throws by Gabrielle Boever.
Creighton's Jasmin Corbin then slammed the door shut, hitting three-pointers from both wings on back-to-back possessions to put the Bluejays up by 10 with under five minutes to play. SDSU would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Carli Tritz led four Creighton players in double figures with 13 points. Nelson, Fujan and Corbin each finished with 11.
The Bluejays ended the night 21-of-53 from the field, 39.6 percent, including 7-of-19 from three-point range. Creighton made 14-of-20 free throw attempts, 70 percent.
Megan Waytashek scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Jackrabbits. Boever tallied 10 points, with Ashley Eide and Katie Lingle each scoring nine. Lingle added a game-high nine rebounds to pace SDSU's 39-32 advantage on the boards.
The Jackrabbits finished the game 17-of-50 from the field, 34 percent, with a 5-for-12 effort from behind the arc. At the line, SDSU made 15-of-21 attempts, 71.4 percent. The Jackrabbits also committed 20 turnovers
SDSU closes out its homestand Sunday afternoon by hosting nationally ranked Nebraska. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Frost Arena.
