Laxers Fall To UConn in Season Opener 10-7

STORRS, CT - Junior Kylie Gregory finished with a team-high five points, but the Iona College Lacrosse team fell short in their 2012 season opener at the University of Connecticut, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon at the Sherman Complex.

Gregory tallied twice and assisted on three goals, while senior Casey Scully added three points on the afternoon, scoring twice and adding an assist. Sophomore Nina Veneziale also scored a pair for the Gaels and freshman Meghan Testoni hit the back of the twine once. Junior Brittney Mabus and sophomore Breanna Lade added assists for the Gaels.

Trailing 3-0 early on, Veneziale scored the first goal of the season for Iona with 24:46 remaining off a nice feed from Gregory. Iona scored with under 10 minutes remaining in the half as Mabus found Gregory to cut the deficit to 6-2.

In the second half, the Gaels stepped up their offensive attack and scored three consecutive times inching their way back into the contest. Gregory scored unassisted at 21:18 to make It 8-3. Iona trailed by three after goals by Testoni and Veneziale before the 10 minute mark.

Iona (0-1) made a hard comeback in the final five minutes as Scully added a pair with her final tally coming with 1:54 remaining.  Connecticut (1-0) netminder Brittney Testa made 15 saves, including nine in the second half to hold the lead for her team.

Freshman Blaire Nathanson made six saves, with three coming in each half.  The Gaels finished the contest outshooting the Huskies 26-23 and controlled the grounders 10-5.

For the Huskies, Kiersten Tupper led the team with four goals and an assist. Lauren Kahn scored three times and had an assist.

The Gaels will debut at Mazzella Field on Wednesday, February 22 at 3 p.m. for a meeting with Northeast Conference member Sacred Heart.
