ELON, N.C. - The College of Charleston softball team lost game one, 2-1, to Elon in a weather-adjusted doubleheader at East Field on Saturday afternoon. The second game was suspended due to rain with the teams tied at two after the completion of the fourth inning.

Game two will be resumed on Sunday, May 6 at 1 p.m. with game three of the series to be played immediately after.

Carly Corthell (Reno, Nev.) had an RBI which brought Hope Klicker (Walla Walla, Wash.) to the plate for CofC's lone run in game one.

Mackenzie Maples (Corona, Calif.) has a double and triple and two RBIs in the second game.

GAME ONE: CofC: 1, Elon 2
The Cougars outhit the Phoenix by a 5-3 count but averaged one stranded-runner per inning in the loss. Five different Cougars recorded hits in the contest. Stephanie Saylors (Easley, S.C.) was tagged with the loss despite offering a strong outing in which she only allowed three hits.

Elon starting pitcher Erin O'Shea helped her own cause with a solo homerun in the second inning. Her blast was a low line drive which carried over the fence in left and it represented the only Elon hitter Saylors allowed to reach base in the first five innings.

The Cougars retaliated in their next half inning when Klicker drew a leadoff walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt execution by Kristy Giragosian (Charlotte, N.C.). Corthell delivered the run when she hammered a 0-1 pitch back up the middle to bring Klicker around from second.

The teams remained deadlocked through the middle innings until Elon struck in the sixth to ultimately escape with the victory. Kaitlyn Piazzolla picked up Elon's second hit of the game when she singled up the middle and scored on a two-out RBI single by Camille Hill.

GAME TWO: CofC: 2, Elon: 2 (suspended until Sunday)
The second game saw the Cougars take an early lead when Ashton Jarrett (Hanahan, S.C.) singled up the middle in the first and Maples tripled down the right field line to bring her around to score.

The lead wouldn't hold long, however, as Elon responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Carleigh Nester sparked their rally with a double into right-center field and then took third on a bunt single by Hill. Before the Cougars could regroup, Hill made towards second base which allowed Nester to sneak home while Hill was in a rundown between first and second. Tomeka Watson then doubled into right to score Hill and give Elon the lead. The Phoenix put runners on second and third but Lizzy Vaughn (Placerville, Calif.) made a pair of alert plays to record outs at the plate and minimize the damage.

CofC equalized the game in the third inning in very similar fashion to the run they scored in the first. This time Jarrett produced a bunt single and stole second base before Maples doubled down the left-field line for her second RBI of the game.

The rain intensified as Jarrett prepared to step into the box to lead off the top of the fifth inning. Before a pitch was thrown, the teams were pulled off the field to wait out the rain but the decision was eventually made to resume play on Sunday.
