BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2017 season has arrived for CSU Bakersfield's cross country team as the Roadrunners will open up the year at the Pepperdine Invitational on Friday, Sept. 1.

"I look forward to gauging our fitness level and competitive fire with this first meet," said Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country at CSUB. "Angel Valdez has returned for her senior year, she is stronger than she has been before, and I expect her to lead the way."

Valdez, a native of Bakersfield, is the CSUB record holder in the 4k and 6k race. The senior has led CSUB in each of the team's last 10 races, just one shy of the school's Division I record (LaShya Morgan, 2013-14).

Mansur-Wentworth went on to comment on more of the student-athletes on the 2017 squad: "Paradise Pelzer was the number two `Runner last fall and hopes to close the gap on Angel. Alejandra Frausto has been sticking close to her North High teammate, Paradise, and is ready for her first cross country season."

Alyssa Diaz will be making her `Runner debut on Friday and Mansur-Wentworth expects the McFarland High School graduate to be in the scoring five this year. CSUB's coach also expects redshirt freshman Sonia Holguin, a fellow McFarland native, to round out the scoring five this weekend.

Friday's meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Malbu, Calif. Results will be made available Friday evening.
