MESA, Ariz.---Sacramento State sent CSU Bakersfield into the WAC Tournament's consolation bracket Thursday afternoon as the Hornets defeated the Roadrunners 10-6.

“That was a disappointing ballgame, mostly we didn't play our game in any way today,” said CSUB interim head coach Jeremy Beard.

A two-out Kody Reynolds' double in the top of the first scored a pair of runs for Sacramento State (30-27). CSUB threatened in the bottom of the first as CSU Bakersfield put runners on the corners with two outs. Parker Brahms, the Hornet starter, got Mahlik Jones to ground out to second to end the innings.

After a Ricky Martinez RBI single in the top of the second put Sacramento State up 3-0, Luis Martinez's two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the inning got the Roadrunners on the board. CSUB again put two runners on with two outs, this time; Brahms forced a David Metzgar fly out to center to conclude matters.

Reynolds drove in his third run of the game with a one-out single in the top of the third. James Outman made it 5-2 when he hit his 10th home run of the season in the top of the fourth. Ian Dawkins' two-out double plated a run in the fifth.

Max Carter and Sergio Robles posted back-to-back singles to begin the Roadrunner sixth. Junior Felix hit a grounder into the hole at short. Goodrich took the momentum of the ball and threw onto third to get the first out. Martinez worked out a walk to load the bases. Austin Root, who did not give up a run in 4.2 innings of relief work during the regular season series against CSUB, struck out Mark Pena on five pitches for the second out. Down 0-2 in the count, Andrew Penner recorded his first triple of the season to clear the bases for a 6-5 score. David Metzgar hit shot into the hole at short, but was thrown out by a half a step by Goodrich to end the inning.

Reynolds' 11th home run of the year with two outs in the seventh pushed the Sacramento State lead back to two. Mahlik Jones doubled to right center with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Carter reached on an error. Both runners advanced a base when Sergio Robles grounded out to Root. Felix grounded out to short for the final out.

Raul Ortiz reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an error to get the Sacramento State eighth underway. With the CSUB infield in, Martinez singled up the middle to drive in Ortiz. A second ‘Runner error allowed Martinez to advance to second. With one out, Goodrich tripled to right center to score Martinez. CSUB again brought the infield, this time, facing Esposito. Felix went to the backstop on a foul ball and made the catch to get the second out. Outman doubled to right center to drive in Goodrich for the 10th run. A two-out Felix single in the bottom of the ninth drove in pinch runner Christian Deaton for the final run of the game.

“We could have taken advantage of more mistakes on their end,” Beard said. “Max wasn't sharp, he left the ball up and they took advantage of it, hitting his mistakes. He did enough to keep us in the game, but it was a slow bleeding effect and it cost us in the big picture.”

Reynolds was 3-for-4 with four RBI's. McWilliam went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Goodrich, Outman, and Martinez each tallied two hits. Robles paced CSUB with three hits. He also scored twice. Grotjohn and Carter each charted two for CSUB. The Roadrunners left 12 on compared to eight for Sacramento State. The Hornets outhit the ‘Runners 15-12.

CSUB (29-23) will play Seattle U (20-34-1) in an 11 a.m. game Friday morning. The winner of the CSUB-SU matchup stays alive and plays in the second elimination game of the day at 3 p.m.
