BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunner softball team has reached the halfway point of the 2017 Western Athletic Conference season and CSU Bakersfield is headed to Phoenix, Ariz. to take on Grand Canyon in a three-game series, Apr. 14-15.

The ‘Runners and Lopes have met 20 times in the all-time series, dating back to the 2004 season. Last year, CSUB hosted GCU for a three-game series at the Roadrunner Softball Complex and was swept by the visiting Lopes. Grand Canyon won the first game 6-1, then took both games of the Saturday doubleheader by scores of 6-4 and 4-0.

This season, Grand Canyon will welcome to CSUB to Phoenix with a 28-14 record (3-3 WAC). The Lopes started out the season incredibly hot, going 23-3 over their first 26 games, but have won just five of their last 16 contests. After GCU lost 2-of-3 games to Seattle U to open WAC play, the Lopes took a 2-1 road series win over UMKC last weekend.

The Roadrunners will travel to Arizona with a 6-25 record after a 1-5 start to conference play. CSUB hit the road last weekend and fell in a WAC series against Utah Valley, 2-1. Junior outfielder Julea Cavazos leads the ‘Runners with a .293 batting average this season while utility player Nadia Amezcua is just one point behind her teammate.

CSUB and GCU will open the series with an evening doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 14, before wrapping the series with a single game on Saturday. First pitch on both days is set for 5 p.m. (PT) in Phoenix. Friday’s doubleheader will be streamed live via GCU TV while Saturday’s game will be aired on the WAC Digital Network.
