Delaware State Director of Athletics Dr. D. Scott Gines announced the appointment of Stephen Kimes as the new head coach of the DSU men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams in July 2019.
Kimes will join the Hornets after a highly successful and decorated seven-year stint as head coach at crosstown Wesley College in Dover, where he built the Wolverines into a national small college powerhouse.
Since starting at Wesley in 2012, Kimes has coached seven NCAA Div. III national champions, 45 NCAA All-Americas, 90 NCAA national championship qualifiers, 123 conference champions, 291 all-conference selections and 82 academic all-conference honorees.
This year, Kimes led a sweep by the Wesley women and men in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Championships, marking the third done that the feat has been achieved in meet history.
In 2016 under Kimes, the Wesley men’s outdoor 4x100m relay team set a new NCAA Div. III National Championship meet record with a time of 40.01 seconds. His Wesley men’s 4x400m relay team posted the second fastest time in Div. III Outdoor Championship history at 3:08.26.
Kimes led the Wolverine men to the 2018 ECAC Outdoor Track & Field championship, while 10 Wesley student-athletes were selected as Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Athlete-of-the-Year or Rookie-of-the-Year during his tenure.
In addition, Wesley set 10 CAC, 14 Atlantic East Conference (AEC) and 99% of all school records during his tenure.
Wesley achieved its first-ever track and field national rankings under Kimes. The Wolverine men rose to No. 6 nationally, while the Wesley women’s were ranked as high as No. 17 under his direction.
In cross country, Kimes guided the first Wolverines to earn All-CAC and All-AEC honors.
Kimes is a two-time United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mideast Region Coach-of-the-Year honoree, earning the award for Men’s Outdoor Track in 2018 and for Men’s Indoor Track in 2017.
He was also honored as the Capital Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Coach-of-the-Year in 2014 & 2017.
Prior to his years at Wesley, Kimes was Head Track & Field/Cross Country Coach at Carver Vocational and Technical High School in Baltimore.
“Stephen Kimes transformed the Wesley College track & field / cross country programs into winners through hard work, grit and determination,” said Gines. “His eye for recruiting and developing student-athletes is second to none, and key to his success.
Citing his stellar record and knowledge of the local and regional track and field landscape, Gines added, “I am confident Stephen has what it takes to restore the proud tradition of Delaware State’s track & field, and cross country programs.”
Kimes served as Chairman of the Capital Athletic Conference Track & Field Coaches Committee from 2014-to-17.
He holds two degrees from Marshall University, earning a bachelor’s in Elementary Education in 2000 and a master’s Athletics Administration in 2005.
“Delaware State is an outstanding institution and I’m humbled to be selected to lead its track & field, and cross country programs,” Kimes said. “It’s great for me and my family to remain in the local area. I plan to continue recruiting in this talent-rich region to strengthen the Hornet teams. I’m grateful to Dr. Gines and the DSU administration for the opportunity.
