Delaware State (2-23; 0-10 MEAC) wraps up a three-game road swing with a visit to Norfolk State in a nationally-televised contest (ESPNU). The Hornets, seeking their first MEAC win of the season, bring a 19-game losing streak into the contest. DSU gave North Carolina A&T a scare, but couldn’t come through, in its last outing. The Hornets are coming off a 54-51 loss to the Aggies on the road last Monday (Feb. 5). Delaware State had three chances for a potential game-winning basket in the final seconds of the game. The Hornets held NCA&T to 36% shooting in the first half (9-for-25) en route to a 30-28 lead the break. The Aggies outscored the Hornets 15-2 to start the second half, and opened up a 43-32 lead on a basket with 13:30 left to play. Delaware State chipped away at the deficit over the next nine minutes, and pulled to within 49-47. North Carolina A&T led 52-47 before Pinky Wiley hit a lay-up to pull the Hornets to within three. After the Aggies failed to score on their next two possessions, Jonathan Walker converted a lay-up with 1:05 left to cut NCA&T’s lead to 52-51.On the ensuing possession, a turnover by the Aggies gave DSU the ball with 35 seconds remaining. Kavon Waller had a chance to put the Hornets ahead, but missed a jumper. Delaware State’s Joe Lewis rebounded the ball, but also missed a shot. Waller rebounded the miss by Lewis, but failed to connect again. NCA&T hit two free throws with two seconds left to give NCA&T a 54-51 lead. Waller missed a desperation game-tying three-point attempt at the final buzzer for the Hornets. Lewis recorded his second career double-double for the Hornets, tying all players with 12 points and topping all players with 10 rebounds.
Norfolk State (8-;17; 6-4 MEAC) is trying to bounce back from an 82-52 thrashing at Hampton on Saturday. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Spartans. NSU hit just 20 of its 62 shots from the field (32.3%), including 3 of 17 from three-point range (17.6%). Steven Whitley is NSU’s top scorer at 11.7 points per game, while Alex Long is second on the team with a 10.8 point per-game average. Preston Bungei is the Spartans’ top rebounder at 6.0 per game.
HORNETS vs. SPARTANS SERIES HISTORY ( Series tied 27-27)
This is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season. Norfolk State won the lone 2016-17 meeting 75-70 at Delaware State’s Memorial Hall. The Hornets cut a 14-point second half deficit to one but could not complete the comeback in the game. DSU, which never led in the contest, trailed 34-31 at the break and fell behind 59-45 with eight minutes left to play. The last time the teams played at Norfolk State, the Spartans came out on top 81-71 during the 2014-15 season.
