DURHAM, N.C. – The 21st-ranked Duke volleyball team concluded the 2014 Duke Invitational with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-21) of visiting Furman Saturday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Senior outside hitter Jeme Obeime amassed 16 kills to lead all players, bringing her total to 49 kills for the weekend. The Carmel, Ind., native committed just one attack error on 27 attempts Saturday, good for a .556 hitting percentage against the Paladins.
Obeime was one of three Blue Devils on the all-tournament team. Sophomores Alyse Whitaker and Sasha Karelov rounded out the Duke contingent. Whitaker put down eight kills, hit .438 and added four blocks Saturday, while Karelov totaled a match-high 19 digs.
Junior outside hitter Emly Sklar turned in a double-double, chipping in with 13 kills and 12 digs.
Duke (3-0) cruised to a 25-13 set one victory behind a .500 team hitting percentage. The Blue Devils jumped out to a 10-5 start and finished off the frame with seven straight points. Obeime put down six of the Blue Devils’ 18 kills in the frame, while Sklar added four.
After Duke again bolted out to an early five-point lead in set two, Furman fought back with a run of its own. Down 12-7, the Paladins won 14 of the next 21 points to take a 23-19 late. The Blue Devils responded with a 6-0 run to close out the set. Obeime smashed back-to-back kills to give Duke the 24-23 lead and Karelov sealed the set with a service ace to the back corner of the court.
For the second time in as many sets, Furman rallied from an early deficit to tie the score by the midway point. Duke again had the answer. With the score knotted at 16-all, the Blue Devils rattled off three-straight points to regain command of the set. Up 24-21, Sklar knocked down her 13th kill of the afternoon to seal the victory.
Duke returns to action Tuesday when the Blue Devils host Campbell at 6:30 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
