Just one week removed from breaking the school recordat the 800-meters, freshman Haley Keene put her name in the Canisius record books yet again on Saturday, racing to a new program best in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:01.53.

Keene and the Griffs competed at the Golden Eagle Invitational on Saturday at SUNY Brockport.

“Haley is having an outstanding indoor season,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “She has broken school records in the 800 and 1000-meter races in back-to-back weeks and her confidence in her abilities is growing in leaps and bounds. I have to keep reminding myself that she’s just a freshman.”

Keene led the way for Canisius with her second place finish in the 1000-meter run, but wasn’t the only Griff to set a season-best time. Senior Catherine Phillips finished the mile in 5:13.74 – just over two seconds off school record pace – she’d finish second in the race.

“Catherine had to race very physically early on in the mile, which hampered her race a bit,” Huckle said. “But she’ll be back at it next weekend. That will be her final tune-up before returning to the 3000 for the MAAC Championships.”

The Griffs also put two-runners in the top-four of the 800-meter run. Seniors Jamie Wallace and Brianna Smith finished third and fourth respectively, posting times of 2:27.25 and 2:32.01.

On the men’s side, the Griffs put three in the top-five in the 3000-meter run. Freshman Jeff Antolos took first (8:44.85), with sophomore Travis Jordon (8:54.80) and freshman Xavier Sauvageau (8:55.79) finished fourth and fifth respectively, coming in right behind.

Sophomore Michael Anvelt led the Griffs with a strong performance in the mile. Anvelt raced to a fourth place finish in a time of 4:24.60. Freshman A.J. Stuver also competed in the event, finishing in 4:42.17, which was good for 22nd place.

In the 800, junior Chad Maloy posted a time of 2:02.05 that was good for sixth place. He was followed closely by junior Andrew Coy, who finished in 2:04.90 for 12th overall.

Freshman Brennan Root had a top-three finish for the Griffs, placing third in the 1000-meter run. Root completed the event in a time of 2:37.29. Sophomore Gabe Bender finished in the 10th in the event (2:44.13).

“Overall, I think our athletes improved nicely on the mental side of competition today,” Huckle said. “We have been working on employing better racing tactics and maintaining our mid-race focus, and it payed off for the majority of the team today.”

The Griffs will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 8 again at SUNY Brockport. It’ll be the Griffs final indoor competition prior to the MAAC Championships. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m.
