The Canisius College swimming and diving team will head to the University of Rochester Invitational this weekend to take on Rochester, New York University and Brandeis in a two-day meet.

The event will be the Griffs’ second of the season following last week’s meet with Marist. On the men’s side, the Griffs trailed by just one point heading into the final relay before the Red Foxes won the 400-yard freestyle relay to take the meet’s overall victory.

“It was nice to get the first meet done and get everyone into the race mode,” said head coach Scott Vanderzell. “We’re going to take what we learned from last week, the little that we need to improve on, and try and apply them to this week.”

The Canisius women saw a number of strong performances against the Red Foxes, including freshman Hannah Graesser’s school-record breaking performance in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Griffs’ team of sophomore Clare Battaglia, freshman Marissa Watroba, sophomore Alicia Wheeler, and Graesser also broke the school-record in the 200-yard medley relay.

With 21 freshmen on the roster, a large portion of the roster saw its first collegiate action in the meet with Marist. Now, with experience under their belts, Vanderzell expects them to settle into racing.

“Now that I know how they want to race day in and day out, I look for them to be reliable in the events that they swim,” Vanderzell said. “At this point they’re part of a team and there’s no difference now between a freshmen and a senior, everyone’s part of a team and I expect them to be reliable in everything that they do.”

The Griffs will kick things off Friday at 5 p.m. with diving at SUNY Brockport. The swimming events get underway at Rochester at 6 p.m. The teams will then swim the remaining events on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
