Griffs Aim for Third-Straight MAAC Championship

The Canisius College women’s lacrosse team goes for its third-straight MAAC Championship this weekend in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The top-seeded Griffs being their hunt for the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Friday against No. 4 Siena at 4:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to Sunday’s title game against Fairfield or Marist on Sunday at 1 p.m.

• The Griffs are playing in their seventh MAAC Tournament and their sixth-consecutive.
• Canisius owns a 5-4 all-time record in tournament play. The Griffs won the title in 2011 and 2012, while also advancing to the championship game in 2006.
• The Griffs enter as the No. 1 seed for the first time in seven appearances. Canisius is 3-2 all-time as the higher-seeded team in tournament history.
• Canisius is 1-0 all-time against Friday’s semifinal opponents, Siena. The Griffs are also 3-0 versus second-seeded Fairfield and 1-3 against third-seeded Marist.

• Canisius is looking to make history this weekend as it has a chance to become the first women’s lacrosse team to win three-straight MAAC Championships.
• The Griffs have won the last two conference championships, taking the 2011 title over Fairfield, 13-8, and winning the 2012 crown also against Fairfield, 15-11.
• Canisius became the fourth team to win consecutive MAAC championships last season, joining Le Moyne (2002-03 and 2006-07) and Manhattan (2004-05).

• Canisius won its first two conference titles in the past two seasons, posting victories over each of the three schools at the 2013 tournament along the way.
• In 2011, the Griffs earned an 11-9 win over Siena in the semifinals and a 13-8 victory against Fairfield in the title game. Current assistant coach Allison Daley earned MVP honors.
• Last season, Canisius defeated Marist, 14-5, and Fairfield, 15-11 to earn the title. Morgan Leonard was named MVP after posting nine points and eight goals in the two wins.
• Current Griff Maria Kotas was also named to the All-Tournament Team in each of the last two seasons, while Lindsey Morgan also earned the accolade in 2012.

• The Griffs own a 10-6 edge in the all-time series with Friday’s opponent, Siena.
• Canisius has won the last seven games in the series dating back to the 2008 season.
• The Griffs won the only postseason meeting, taking an 11-9 contest in the 2011 semifinals en route to the team’s first title.
• The Canisius defense led the Griffs to a 13-3 win earlier this season against the Saints. Canisius held Siena to just 12 shots, while forcing 20 turnovers in the win.

• In a series that dates back to 1999, Fairfield holds a 12-6 advantage against Canisius.
• The Griffs, however, have won three of the last four meetings between the two schools.
• Canisius is also a perfect 3-0 against the Stags during the postseason, including wins in each of the last two MAAC Championships.
• In the 2013 regular-season meeting, the Griffs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 13-6 win at Fairfield. It was Canisius’ first regular-season win against the Stags since 2006.

• The Griffs have played Marist 20 times, the most of any opponent in Canisius’ history.
• Marist owns a 15-5 edge against the Griffs.
• Canisius, however, has won 4-of-6 meetings since the seniors first arrived on campus.
• The schools have met in the postseason in four of the last five years. Marist won semifinal contests from 2008 to 2010, while Canisius earned a 14-5 in the semis last year.
• The teams met last Saturday in a matchup for the tournament’s top seed. An 11-2 first-half run gave the Griffs a 16-13 win.
