Roadrunners finish fourth at Western Athletic Conference Championship

MESA, Ariz. — No. 46 UTSA closed play at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship on Wednesday and the Roadrunners finished in fourth place with a three-day total of 907 (297-310-300).

Fabiola Arriaga led UTSA with a 223 (76-74-73) to tie for sixth place. The Torreon, Mexico, native shot two-over-par on the front nine before posting birdies on No. 15 and 18 to improve her score for the for the second consecutive day and notch her fifth top-10 finish of the season.

Meanwhile, Taylor Newlin carded three birdies to pull into a tie for 12th with a 227 (73-79-75). The Frisco native finished the event with a team-high eight birdies to go along with an eagle in the first round.

Paola Valerio was not far behind with a 229 (76-77-76) to tie for 16th, while freshman Allie Johnston tied for 18th at 230 (72-80-78). Brogan Townend rounded out the UTSA lineup with a 235 (79-80-76), which was good for 28th place.

Arriaga earned first-team All-WAC honors, which marked her third consecutive year on a conference's top squad. Valerio became the first UTSA golfer to earn all-conference honors in four seasons after she was named to the second team along with Newlin, who picked up her third straight all-league certificate.

No. 29 Denver took the team title with an 882 (295-291-296) and the Pioneers were led by individual medalist Tonje Daffinrud’s seven-under-par 209 (68-72-69). San Jose State saw its run of four consecutive tournament titles come to an end with an 894 (297-298-299), while 38th-ranked Texas State placed third at 904 (311-297-296).

UTSA now will await the announcement of the postseason bids to see if it will qualify for its third consecutive NCAA Regional. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show is scheduled to be broadcast at at 8 p.m. on Monday, April 29.
