DURHAM, N.C.-After months of construction the long awaited time had arrived for the Duke University soccer programs to unveil their improved practice site. An upgrade from the previous field, the facility was raised just over two feet, drainage installed and new natural grass and sand laid down to make it one of the best practice facilities in the country.

"I just want to thank the Duke administration, alums and all of our  supporters out there who made this possible," head coach John Kerr said. "This is an incredible facility and I truly believe it is one of the best. I can't imagine a better setting to come out to every day with these guys. This is a great moment in this program's history."

Through the generosity of Duke supporters and the commitment of the Duke University administration the soccer programs will enjoy the upgraded setting and be able to practice year around and host spring competitions. Previously, Duke had to practice on the turf fields because of weather.

"I thank all of my colleagues in athletics and throughout the university who work to build great facilities," Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead said. "I think this is one we will get so much use from. It will help in recruiting, it will help you be the best you can be. This is a university where the excellence of our teams' images is the excellence we aspire to in every capacity and the excellence of our facilities is the foundation which makes everything else flow."

The Blue Devils open the 2012 home schedule this weekend with the John Rennie Nike Invitational. Duke hosts Santa Clara Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m., and Delaware Sept. 2 at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on the Blue Devil Network.
