Canisius College men's basketball coach Jim Baron announced today that Jermaine Johnson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) has signed his National Letter of Intent and will join the Golden Griffins for the 2012-13 season.
"We are excited to add Jermaine to our program," Baron said. "We like his speed and his ability to handle the ball, and he's not afraid to work hard, both on and off the court. This is the kind of student-athlete we are looking to add to our program here at Canisius."
Johnson is a 5-foot-10, 150-pound point guard who averaged 20 points, 5.0 steals and 4.0 assists per game in his senior season at St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Va. He was named the 2012 Virginia Prep League Player of the Year and also earned second-team all-state honors and was recognized to the third-team All-Metro Team by the Richmond Times Dispatch.
"When I met the players and the coaching staff on my visit, I felt like they were a family and I really loved the atmosphere," Johnson said. "Coach Baron talked about how he wants to play. He wants to get up-and-down and score quickly on offense and then press on defense. That style fits my game perfectly. The academic side of things here was really impressive too. Canisius was the perfect combination of basketball and school for me and that's what I was looking for during the recruiting process."
In two seasons at St. Christopher's, Johnson scored 975 points and helped lead the Saints to a 34-23 overall record. Those 34 wins stand as the most for the program in a two-year time period. He plans on majoring in business or economics at Canisius.Canisius will return four starters and eight letterwinners to the 2012-13 roster, which will be led by Baron in his first year as the Griffs' head coach. Johnson joins with Phil Valenti (Victor, N.Y.), who signed his National Letter of Intent to join the Canisius program in November 2011.
