DURHAM, N.C. - Duke freshman Beatrice Capra is piling up accolades for her accomplishments in 2012, and added to her list on Monday when she was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Carolina Region Rookie of the Year. An Ellicott City, Md. native, Capra becomes the seventh Blue Devil since 2001 to receive the honor.

The nation's second-ranked player, Capra became just the second player in program history to be named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Freshman of the Year and the ACC Tournament's Most Valuable Player in the same season since Karin Miller achieved the feat in 1997. The newcomer is 27-3 overall, 18-3 against nationally ranked opponents, went 9-0 in ACC matches and owns a 21-1 mark playing at the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup. Capra is currently on a 15 match winning streak, tied for the third-longest by any freshman in program history.

The six other Duke players since 2001 to earn the award include: Rachel Kahan (2011), Mallory Cecil (2009), Ellah Nze (2008), Melissa Mang (2006), Kelly McCain (2002) and Ansley Cargill (2001).

Capra will take to the courts again on Thursday, May 17, when third-seeded Duke takes on Virginia at 4 p.m., in the third round of the 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships. The match will be played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
