Release: May 06, 2012
FARGO, N.D. - Joe Karlik scattered seven hits over nine innings as Southern Utah defeated North Dakota State 4-1 in Summit League baseball Sunday, May 6, at Newman Outdoor Field.
David Headley was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in the third and Marcus Romero was 2-for-4 with a run-scoring double in the sixth for Southern Utah, which improved to 15-28 overall and 9-6 in the league.
Tyler Steen went 2-for-3, Nick Colwell hit a sacrifice fly, and Max Casper and Zach Wentz both doubled for North Dakota State (35-13, 11-5). The Bison stranded eight base runners including seven in scoring position.
Wentz allowed all four runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts in the loss. Simon Anderson allowed one hit and struck out one in three scoreless innings of relief.
Headley's two-out triple scored Brad Royer from first after a one-out walk and gave SUU a 1-0 lead.
The Thunderbirds tacked on three more runs in the sixth. Headley and Chase Rezac singled before Romero's double, Mitchell Kauweloa singled in Rezac, and Kevin Kline's sac fly scored Romero to make it 4-0.
NDSU took advantage of three SUU errors in the seventh to get on the board. Kyle Kleinendorst reached on a two-base error, advanced to third on a fielding error, and scored one out later on Colwell's fly to left.
After SUU's three straight errors and a mound visit from interim head coach Clayton Carson, the Thunderbirds got nine straight outs to preserve the victory.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host Oakland in a four-game Summit League series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 11. The first-place Golden Grizzlies (19-26, 10-3) had three games rained out at South Dakota State after a 4-2 win Saturday.
