SAUGET, ILL - The Saint Louis Billikens stumbled to 30-15 on the season with a 7-2 against Southern Illinois Edwardsville. Senior Jerry Mancuso picks up the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead. The first pitch of the game was bunted down the third base line for a infield single. The second pitch from Mancuso was belted over the right field wall for a two-run homer.
The Billikens answered in the second with some small ball. Grant Nelson walked to open the inning and C.J. Rose ripped a ground rule double down the left field line to advance Nelson to third. Freshman Jon Corbitt hit a grounder to third to score Nelson for SLU's first run.
Mental mistakes cost Saint Louis in the fourth. With runners at first and second, the Cougars tried to bunt the runners over. Mancuso's pitch was wild, but the Cougar runners left, regardless. Corbitt scooped up the ball and rifled down to second, however the Bills were in their bunt defense and no one was covering second. The runner at second came all the way around to score and the runner on first moved to second.
Mike Vigliarolo kept the deficit at one with a long ball to left field in the bottom of the fourth, to bring the score to 3-2. It was his fourth homer of the season.
In the seventh, junior Jon Levin was roughed up. He struck out his first batter, but gave up a single to the following batter. The next hitter, ripped a mammoth home run to left field and making the score 5-2. The Cougars added a run later in the inning to leave the seventh up 6-2.
SIUE added one more run in the ninth to bring the final tally to 7-2.
Saint Louis will host St. Bonaventure this weekend for their penultimate conference series. The Billikens sit in fourth in the A-10 standings with an 11-7 record. The top six teams make the conference tournament. Last season, the sixth place team had 13 wins. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
