RICHMOND, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team (4-0-1) remained unbeaten as it took down VCU (4-1-1) by a 4-3 score on Sunday night at Sports Backers Stadium. Sunday’s match experienced a total of three ties and two lead changes. The Monarchs extended their regular season unbeaten streak to 12 (dating back to the 2018 season), as ODU is 9-0-3 in its last 12 regular season matches.

“That was a very typical game that we have always had against VCU,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “They are a quality side and we had to work really hard together today to get this result. I’m really pleased with how determined we were and resilient when we needed to be, especially at the end when they piled the pressure on. On the other side we scored some great goals. This was another good result that keeps good momentum going into our final few games of the non-conference schedule. I am so proud of the team.”

Amanda Nhek started off the scoring off a pass from Kyra Ricks in the 14th minute to give ODU a 1-0 lead. The goal was Nhek’s fifth goal in as many games.

VCU tied the match in the 15th minute and then eventually took a 2-1 lead in the 25th minute. However, in the 28th minute, Kyra Ricks leveled the score at 2 apiece off an assist from Nhek. Just four minutes later in the 31st minute, Ricks struck again, giving the Monarchs a 3-2 lead, with Cami Johnstone providing the assist.

With 12 seconds remaining in the opening half, the Rams nodded the match at 3-3.

It was ODU freshman Megan Watts who scored the game-winner in the 75th minute off an Emma Gervase assist, ultimately lifting Old Dominion to a 4-3 victory over VCU on Sunday night in Richmond.

Jasmine Crawley made three saves in goal for ODU. VCU held a 15-10 advantage in the shots department and a 5-2 advantage for corner kicks.

Old Dominion will return to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 12, when the Monarchs travel to Greenville, N.C. for a 7:00 p.m. start at ECU.
