UC San Diego

ST. GEORGE, Utah - A second-straight day of strong play Friday has the University of California San Diego men's golf team in third place of 20 squads following two rounds at the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional at The Ledges Golf Club in southwestern Utah. Two Tritons are among the top 10 players in the 108-competitor field.

After shooting a season-best 287 in Thursday's opening round, UC San Diego carded a 289 in the tournament's second round, giving the team a 576, even par on the par 72, 7,145 yard course.

Junior Hayden Hui is in a four-way tie for second place, while classmate Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) is tied for eighth.

Dixie State University is hosting the 54-hole tournament. The top four teams and top two individuals not with a team advance to the NCAA Championships, which run May 20-24 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia.

Hui, who has been UC San Diego's top finisher in nine of 11 events so far this season, is 6 under with a 138 after shooting consecutive rounds of 69. He was tied for fifth heading into Friday.

Navigato is 3 under par with a 141. He shot a 73 Friday to go along with a 68 in the first round, a performance that included two eagles and landed him in a tie for third.

Also on course for the Tritons are freshman Elliot Bunyaviroch (tied for 66th, 76-74--150) and juniors Jacob Johnson (tied for 76th, 78-73--151) and Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (tied for 76th, 74-77--151).

Dixie State continues to lead the field by a hefty margin with a 565, 11 under par. Midwestern State (574, -2) is second and Sonoma State (577, +1) and Western New Mexico (577, +1) are tied for fourth place. Four other teams hold single-digit over par totals including Cal State Monterey Bay, which jumped up eight spots in the standings to sixth after shooting a 9 under 279 Friday.

Chase Carlson of Colorado Christian, who is playing as an individual and not with his team, sits atop the leader board with a 9 under 135. He carded rounds of 67 and 68. In total, 17 players are under par through two rounds.

The course played to a 73.27 average Friday after demanding a 75.19 Thursday.

UC San Diego had previously played The Ledges this season, finishing in a tie for 21st in a 27-team field at the Fall Regional Preview in mid-October. Four of the five Tritons currently in Utah competed in that tournament including Hui, Johnson, Navigato, and Woo. Hui tied for seventh as UC San Diego's top golfer, firing an impressive 67 in the second and final round after shooting an even par 72 in the first.

UC San Diego tees off in the third and final round at 11:50 a.m. PT Saturday. The Tritons are paired up with Dixie State and Midwestern State. Action can be followed with live scoring.

UC San Diego is playing in the NCAA Division II Regional as a team for the seventh time overall and first time since 2014.
