Tritons Tied for Second After Day One of NCAA Regional

UC San Diego

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The University of California San Diego men's golf team recorded its best round of the season Thursday and is tied for second place after the first day of play at the NCAA Division II West/South Central Regional at The Ledges in southwestern Utah.

UC San Diego totaled a 287 (-1), its lowest single round score since September of 2016.

Two Tritons are among the top five in the 108-player field. Junior Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) is tied for third after firing a 68 (-4) and classmate Hayden Hui is tied for fifth with a 69 (-3).

Dixie State University is hosting the 20-team, 54-hole tournament. The par 72 Ledges course is playing at 7,145 yards.

Navigato's stellar round included two eagles, four birdies, nine pars, two bogeys, and one double bogey. His eagles came on the par 5 third hole and the par 4 sixth hole. It marks the third-best round of his career as he shot a pair of 65's in October of 2017.

Hui, who has been UC San Diego's top finisher in nine of 11 events so far this season, holed one eagle, three birdies, 12 pars, and two bogeys. He cupped his eagle on the par 5 seventh. Hui now has three rounds in the 60's this season.

Also on course for the Tritons are junior Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (74, tied for 34th), freshman Elliot Bunyaviroch (76, tied for 62nd), and junior Jacob Johnson (78, tied for 83rd).

Dixie State is leading by four strokes after finishing with a 283 (-5). Sonoma State is tied with UC San Diego and both teams are three strokes ahead of fourth-place St. Edward's.

Ben Constancio of St. Edward's is on top of the leader board as he shot a 66 (-6). Colorado Christian's Chase Carlson is second with a 67 (-5). Sixteen players finished under par.

The course played to a 75.19 stroke average Thursday. A total of 14 eagles were collected.

UC San Diego had previously played The Ledges this season, finishing in a tie for 21st in a 27-team field at the Fall Regional Preview in mid-October. Four of the five Tritons currently in Utah competed in that tournament including Hui, Johnson, Navigato, and Woo. Hui tied for seventh as UC San Diego's top golfer, firing an impressive 67 in the second and final round after shooting an even par 72 in the first.

UC San Diego tees off in the second round at 11 a.m. PT Friday. The Tritons will be playing with 11th-place Arkansas-Fort Smith and Concordia Portland, which is tied for 16th. The third and final round will be contested Saturday.

The Tritons are playing in the NCAA Division II Regional as a team for the seventh time overall and first time since 2014.

The top four teams and top two individuals not with a team from the South Central/West Regional advance to the NCAA Championships, which run May 20-24 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia.
