CCAA Championships: Tritons Third, Three Players in Top 10 After Opening Day

SEASIDE, Calif. - With three players in the top 10, the UC San Diego men's golf team is third of nine following Tuesday's first two rounds of play at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships at Black Horse in the Monterey Bay area.

The Tritons shot a 290 in the first round and a 295 in the second for a total of 585, 9 over par. Their 290 was the third-lowest single round total on the day.

The top three teams are closely bunched with Cal State East Bay leading at 6 over (582) and Cal State Monterey Bay in second at 7 over (583). Sonoma State (589) is fourth, four strokes behind UC San Diego, in fourth place.

Three Tritons are sitting in a four-player tie for seventh in the 45-competitor field. Juniors Hayden Hui (73-73), Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) (72-74), and Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (72-74) all totaled 146, 2 over par.

The fourth scoring player for UC San Diego, freshman Elliot Bunyaviroch, is just outside the top 10 in a tie for 11th. He had rounds of 73 and 74 and is 3 over with a 147.

Jacob Johnson is also competing for the Tritons. The junior is tied for 30th, 8 over par with a 152 after firing rounds of 78 and 74.

Atop the leader board at 4 under are Sonoma State's Spencer Clapp (74-66) and Cal State Monterey Bay's Elis Svard (69-71). Clapp's 66 in the second round was the best score of the day. 

The Black Horse Course played at 6991 yards today. For Wednesday's third and final round, it shortens by just over 100 yards, totaling 6890.

UC San Diego tees off at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday and the round can be followed with live scoring.

The winner of the CCAA Championships receives an automatic berth into the NCAA South Central/West Regional, which will be held May 9-11 at The Ledges in St. George, Utah. The top 10 teams from the West Region and the top 10 teams from the South Central Region qualify to compete. The selections will officially be announced by the NCAA on Friday, April 26, at 3 p.m. Pacific.
