UC San Diego Places 7th at Hanny Stanislaus Invitational
TURLOCK, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's golf team placed seventh of 17 schools as the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational concluded Tuesday at the Turlock Golf & Country Club.
UC San Diego finished with an 878, 14 over par on the par 72, 6,641-yard course. The consistent Tritons shot 292-293-293 over the two-day, 54-hole tourney.
Junior Hayden Hui was the top player for UC San Diego, finishing in a tie for 10th in the 91-player field with a 217, 1 over par. He shot 74-73-70, improving his standing by 12 spots with Tuesday's solid round as he was tied for 22nd at the end of the day Monday. For the tourney, Hui made 13 birdies, tied for the second-most in the field.
It was the sixth top-10 finish for Hui this season.
Also playing for the Tritons, junior Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (70-74-75--219) tied for 27th, while freshman Elliot Bunyaviroch (76-71-75--222) and sophomore Ryan Vaughan (74-75-73--222) tied for 35th.
Chico State, the 10th-ranked team in the nation, ran away with the team tle with an 845 (-19), 19 strokes in front of its nearest competitors. The Wildcats had rounds of 277, 282, and 286. No. 20 Simon Fraser (290-290-284--864) and host Stanislaus State (294-286-284--864) tied for second.
Chico's Josh McCollum was the individual medalist, carding a 206 (-10) with rounds of 67, 67, and 72.
The Turlock layout played to a 75.44 stroke average, with the second round coming in at a tournament-high 75.88. A total of 24 eagles were holed over the three rounds.
UC San Diego next competes at the UCSB Intercollegiate, April 15-16 at Sandpiper in Santa Barbara. It is the final tune-up for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship, which runs April 22-24 at at Blackhorse in Seaside.
