Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina redshirt senior punter Ian Berryman has been tabbed a first-team preseason All-America by Athlon Sports and contributing writer Craig Haley, who also writes for STATS FCS Football. The preseason national honor is the second for Berryman entering the 2018 season, also garnering a second-team nod from HERO Sports in mid-June.

Berryman was one of three Southern Conference players to grace the team, joined by defensive linemen Miles Brown from Wofford and Ahmad Gooden from Samford.

Receiving four different All-America selections at the end of his redshirt junior season, Berryman was a consensus first-team All-Southern Conference selection a year ago. He earned second-team recognition from the Associated Press (AP), Phil Steel, and College Sports Madness while tallying a third-team nod from HERO Sports, while also collecting FCS ADA Academic All-Star team plaudits.

A product of Marietta, Ga., Berryman ranked second in the SoCon with a 44.45 yard per punt average last season coming on 58 total punts – the third-best, single-season average in WCU program history. For a second-consecutive season, he finished among the national leaders in punt average, placing among the national top five for the second time in as many tries by finishing fifth in the NCAA FCS. Berryman boomed 17 kicks over 50-yards including a season-long of 62 yards twice. He also managed to down a career-best 26 punts inside an opponents’ 20-yard line with just six touchbacks.

Entering his senior year, Berryman ranks eighth in WCU program history with 168 career punts including 50 boots of 50-or-more yards over the last three seasons. He has averaged 44.33 yards per punt, the top average in program history.

The 2018 Southern Conference preseason polls and all-conference teams are slated to be released around July 25 as the off-season grinds towards preseason camp. WCU’s football student-athletes – many of which will be enrolled and on-campus for the second semester of summer school in July – officially report for fall camp on Friday, Aug. 3 with the team’s first helmet-only practice on Saturday, Aug. 4.
