LYNCHBURG, Va. – Blue Hen pitcher Sarah Piening escaped a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the seventh inning as the University of Delaware softball team held on for a 4-2 victory over Ohio University Sunday afternoon at the Liberty Classic.

The Blue Hens (4-14) took a two-run lead into the final inning, but the Bobcats (9-10) quickly loaded the bases on two walks sandwiched around a single. However Piening retired Desirae Villanueva on an infield pop up, and after Allie Englant flew out to leftfield, Giovanna Kolofer fired to third baseman Sarah Bessel, who threw out Alexa Holland at the plate to end the game.

Delaware took the lead in the top of the second inning when Anna Steinmetz led off with a single and two outs later scored on a double to leftcenter by Chayanna Gallardo. Ali Davis and Leanna Gearhart then led off the third with walks, before Steinmetz delivered a two-run double to left as the Blue Hens went up three.

Kolofer hit a sacrifice fly to drive home pinch runner Julia Solderitch in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 4-0 game, before the Bobcats scored their only two runs in the bottom half.

Piening picked up her third victory in the circle after allowing two runs on five hits in a complete game effort. Steinmetz finished 3 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI, while Gallardo also had two hits on the day for the Blue Hens.
