VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The University of Delaware men’s soccer team dropped its first contest of the year Wednesday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Villanova in double overtime at Higgins Soccer Complex.

The ‘golden goal’, which was scored on a penalty kick, was awarded to Villanova (3-2) because Blue Hens (2-1-1) goalkeeper Todd Morton was called for a foul on Yusuf Cueceoglu’s late overtime run.

Cueceoglu leaked out following a Blue Hens corner eluding a pair of Blue Hen defenders in the process. The freshman made a dangerous run into the box, where he found himself alone with just the keeper to beat. Before Cueceoglu was able to attempt a shot, he was tripped up by Morton. The trip earned Morton a yellow card but more importantly gave the Wildcats a penalty kick.

On the penalty kick, Morton guessed correctly diving to his right-hand side, but the shot by Max Kroschwitz just snuck past the junior. The goal gave the Wildcats their seventh consecutive victory over Delaware.

Villanova tallied the first goal in the 15th minute off a corner, while Fede Prieto tallied the lone Delaware goal in the 34th minute.

Morton ended up making six saves in the match, including a pair of highlight reel efforts on Villanova set pieces. Delaware was outshot in the match 21-13.

Head Coach Ian Hennessy

"We've had some terrific games with Villanova over the years, and this was another one. Credit to Villanova for earning the win today. They are the best team we have played this year and played some lovely soccer today. The spirit in our group was terrific and I am gutted for them to have lost so close to the end, where we could have gotten the result we needed to remain unbeaten. We have a little break now to get some players back healthy and hopefully be at full strength for another Big East foe in Seton Hall."
