EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The UMKC volleyball team will look for its second straight winning weekend when it heads east to Edwardsville, Ill., for the Cougar Classic. The Roos open the event on Friday with a 4:30 p.m. match against Tulsa, before taking on Wright State on Saturday at 10 a.m. UMKC then closes out the event against host SIU Edwardsville later in the day at 7 p.m.
About the Roos
UMKC opened the 2017 season with a 2-1 weekend in the Culver Governors Challenge in Clarksville, Tenn. In the event, the Roos took down Middle Tennessee and Marshall while falling to host Austin Peay. With her effort in the event, Preseason All-WAC selection Alicia Harrington was named to the all-tournament team.
About the Golden Hurricanes
Tulsa heads to Edwardsville with a 1-2 mark on the season after defeating UTEP and falling to North Texas and Montana in the North Texas Invitational. Offensively, Emily Thorson led the Golden Hurricanes with 39 kills, while Callie Cook added 26 kills and 10 blocks.
About the Raiders
Wright State enters the tournament after going 0-3 in the difficult Long Beach Tournament. WSU opened with a loss to Iowa before falling to host Long Beach State. The Raiders then fell to No. 2 Stanford in the finale. Abby Barcus led the squad with 22 kills, while hitting .268.
About the Cougars
SIUE started the 2017 season with a perfect 3-0 record at the Fort Wayne Invitational, picking up wins over Toledo, Fort Wayne and Quinnipiac. Taylor Joens led the Cougars with 37 kills in the event, while hitting .417 with a 1.08 blocks per set average leading to a spot on the all-tournament team.
The Roos return to Kansas City on Sep 8-9 to host the Kangaroo Klassic. UMKC opens on Friday with a 1 p.m. tilt against South Dakota before taking on Rutgers at 7 p.m. The Blue & Gold then close out the event with a 1:30 p.m. contest with Northern Iowa.
