Whitney Johnson Named Summit League Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week

ELMHURST, Ill. - Southern Utah's Mikkel Griffin and Heather Black and North Dakota State's Whitney Johnson were named The Summit League's Softball Player and Pitchers of the Week for their performances April 16-22.

Johnson claims her fifth career Pitcher of the Week honor and second of the season after throwing her first career no-hitter in a 4-0 win over UMKC.  In the win over the Kangaroos, the right-handed hurler threw her third shutout of the season and the 23rd of her career, striking out 10 batters and walking one.   In her third start of the week, she struck out seven, while allowing five hits, one earned run and two walks in 6.1 innings.  On the week, Johnsons struck 17 batters, while yielding eight hits, eight walks and five earned runs in 19.1 innings of work for a 1.81 ERA.

Black garners her third career Pitcher of the Week award and second of the season after going undefeated (3-0) on the week with three shutouts.  In game one of the series, she tossed a two-hitter with no walks, while striking out three.  She bettered that performance in game two, throwing a one-hitter with a walk and three strikeouts.  In the series finale, she fanned eight with no walks and four hits.  For the week, Black struck out 17 batters, while allowing seven hits, one walk and no runs in 16 innings of work for a 0.00 ERA.

Griffin collects her fourth career Player of the Week honor after leading the Thunderbirds to a series sweep of South Dakota State.  The outfielder hit for the cycle during the three-game series, including two multi-hit games.  She opened the series going 1-for-2 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in game one of the doubleheader and followed that up with a 2-for-3 performance with a double, two RBI and one run scored in game two.  To end the series, the St. George, Utah, native hit 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a RBI.  For the week, Griffin hit .556 (5-for-9) with a 1.222 slugging percentage, five RBI, five runs scored, a home run, a triple a double and a walk.
