Huskers Finish 16th in ITA Rankings

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team capped one of the best seasons in school history by closing the 2011-12 campaign with its highest ranking ever, finishing the year at No. 16 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 75.

Nebraska's No. 16 final ranking by the ITA was one spot higher than the No. 17 the Huskers reached multiple times during the year. NU was one of three Big Ten Conference teams to close the year in the top 16 nationally, trailing only No. 12 Northwestern and No. 14 Michigan in the final poll. Illinois finished No. 21, while Purdue just missed a top-25 finish by closing the year at No. 26. Overall, 10 Big Ten teams finished among the top 75 teams in the nation.

The 2011-12 Huskers set a school record with 24 victories and finished the year with a 24-5 overall record that included a 9-2 mark in NU's first season in the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska, which tied for third in the Big Ten, made its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round for the second time in school history.

Nebraska expects to return a majority of its lineup in 2012-13, including top singles player Mary Weatherholt, who earned a trip to the NCAA Women's Singles Championship. Weatherholt was ranked among the top 50 players in the country during her junior season. The Huskers also return Patricia Veresova, Stefanie Weinstein, Janine Weinreich, Maike Zeppernick and Izabella Zgierska next season.

The Huskers will have to overcome the loss of the school's all-time wins leader Madeleine Geibert to graduation. Geibert and Weinstein were ranked among the top 25 doubles teams in the country during the course of the 2011-12 season. NU also loses senior Jennifer Holmberg to graduation. Holmberg finished her senior season with a 6-2 singles mark.
