Thibodaux, La. - Sheridan Currie, Natalie Petaia, Tanya Postnikova and Olivia Battye accounted for the Bearkats' four points as Sam Houston State defeated Nicholls State 4-3 in the pair's Southland Conference Southland women's tennis opener Saturday afternoon.

Currie won at number two singles 6-1 6-1 over Andrea Pont Grau. Petaia took three sets to dispatch Janna Leeuwrik 6-0 4-6 6-2 at number three singles.

Postnikova won at number four singles 6-0 6-0 against Cartherine Gauthier.  Battye took care of Marina Ljoshevslea 6-0 6-3 at six singles.

Sam Houston lost the doubles point with the team's only pro set doubles victory coming at number two as Postnikova and Nadia Duyanskaya paired for an 8-4 win.

The Bearkats continue their Southland Conference swing through southern Louisiana Sunday with an 11 a.m. match at Southeastern Louisiana
