LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Feb. 26) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team defeated the University of Texas of the Permian Basin 7-0 Sunday morning at the NM State Tennis Complex.

The Aggies cruised to a victory over the Falcons to improve to 5-3 on the year, with a total match time of one hour and 45 minutes.

Senior co-captain Natalia Salum competed in doubles while fighting an illness, but sat-out during singles play. She remains an undefeated at 7-0 in singles this season.

"These matches are usually more difficult than they seem; they require a lot of focus and concentration," head coach Ivan Fernandez said about the victory over Division II UTPB. "It gave me an opportunity to change around some of the doubles teams and see some different combinations."

The normal doubles combinations of Jodie Williams/Natalia Salum, Manon Sylvain/Denise Van Der Ben, and Ginet Pinero/Ros-Polly Nguyen were broken up for the match. Williams did not play against UTPB and was replaced in the doubles lineup by Annemieke Witte.

All three doubles teams won by the score of 8-1 to give the Aggies an early team lead. NM State then swept the Falcons in singles, winning convincingly at all six positions.

Nguyen and Witte moved up one spot in the singles lineup to Nos. 4 and 5 respectively due to Salum's absence. Freshman Mandy Mallen played in her fourth singles match at the No. 6 spot, defeating Tiffany Mitchell of UTPB 6-0, 6-1.

Senior co-captain Manon Sylvain followed up a doubles victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Breigh Shotwell of UTPB at No. 1 singles.

NM State's next match will be on Friday, March 2, when rival New Mexico (4-2) invades Las Cruces. Doubles will begin at 3 p.m.

"It's always tough when we play against UNM," Fernandez said. "We're coming in with a lot of momentum and confidence. Hopefully we can take it to them."
