The 2012 season will be Mas Shibata's third as an assistant coach with the UCSD women's volleyball program.
UCSD has posted a 41-15 record since Shibata joined the staff and has qualified for NCAA postseason play both years. In 2011, the team was ranked as high as 10th in the nation, while it climbed to a No. 8 ranking in 2010.
Previously, Shibata was the video coordinator and volunteer assistant coach at Stanford during the 2009 season.
Shibata also served as the video coordinator at Stanford in 2007, helping lead the team to its second straight Pac-10 title and an appearance in the NCAA Championship match. In his two years at Stanford, the Cardinal went a combined 55-11, including a 30-6 record in conference action.
Shibata began his coaching career at Pacific in 1990 and spent 12 seasons with the Tiger program, eight as a full-time assistant coach. The Tigers achieved a 207-53 mark over those eight seasons. Pacific won three Big West titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during each campaign, reaching the National Semifinals in 1999.
During the 2004 season Shibata was an assistant coach at the University of Oregon. He has also worked with the San Diego Volleyball Club.
Shibata obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in real estate and finance from Fresno State in 1977.
