After spending a few days in Frisco, Texas, attending the FCS National Championship Game and related events, I unequivocally continue to be proud of my association with the FCS!

Southland Conference Commissioner Tom Burnett, along with his staff and “Team Frisco,” are to be commended for putting on an outstanding event from start to finish.  All events and functions were well-organized and well-presented.

Rave reviews were a constant in Frisco and were prevalent among those associated with the two finalists, the University of Delaware and Eastern Washington University.  Those compliments were nice to hear and echoed comments made by Greg Shaheen, NCAA interim executive vice president of championships and business strategies, during the FCS Summit (more on that later) as it related to the “championship experience” of student-athletes continuing to be a priority in the eyes of the NCAA.

The term “bowl experience” was mentioned on several occasions.  Between the reception the teams received at the airport and their hotels, the visit to a local elementary school for a “pep rally,” the “BBQ Bowl” social, complete with cowboys and lassos, and last but not least, the brilliant appearance of the championship game facility itself, it truly can be said that the student-athletes should always be able to look back on their trip to Frisco knowing that they were treated extremely well.

Also relevant, from my perspective, and something which played into allowing for the teams’ trip to Frisco to truly be a “bowl experience,” was the three-week break between the semifinal games and the title game.  Fans had more time to make travel plans and the student-athletes had time to recover physically from a grueling regular season and playoff schedule, which put them in a better state of mind to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience and in better shape to compete to the best of their capabilities in the ultimate game.

summitThe all-day FCS Summit was outstanding in that it brought together a collection of individuals who care deeply about the future of the FCS.  The fact that nearly 150 people (athletics directors, commissioners, media) were in attendance serves as Exhibit A regarding the viability of our subdivision.  The discussion was good and everyone was in agreement that it should be ongoing … perhaps at the NACDA Convention in Orlando in June.  I would also be remiss for not mentioning how awesome it was to have new NCAA President, Dr. Mark Emmert, as the keynote speaker for our luncheon and how appreciative all of us in the FCS are to Dr. Emmert for his time and for his insightful message.

And, finally, thanks to Delaware and Eastern Washington for an exciting championship game.  As I thought back through the 35 FBS bowl games, I am not sure any of them were any more exciting than what we all watched in Frisco on January 7.

Here’s to a great 2011 for everyone associated with the Football Championship Subdivision!

The 52 winners of the 13th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team were announced by the FCS ADA on January 4. There were 92 total nominees.

“The FCS ADA looks forward to honoring the accomplishments of its football student-athletes each year with the announcement of the Academic All-Star Team,” said FCS ADA President Greg Burke, chair of the FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team Selection Committee and athletics director at Northwestern State University. “The dedication by these young men to perform successfully both on the field of competition and in the classroom epitomizes the definition of a Division I student-athlete.”
