Dover, Del. (Dec. 7) --- The Lady Hornets asserted their dominance at the UMES Cappy Anderson College Invite as DSU finished the invitational by recording seven first place finishes.

The day started unassuming enough, as Juniors T’keyah Macklin and Ahnrea McCaskill finished in seventh and eighth place respectively with times of 26.75 seconds and 26.77 seconds in the 200 meters.

However, on the next event sophomore Lakendra Harpe placed first in the 400 meters with a time of 1-minute-0.6 seconds (1:00.06) This is Harpe’s third, first place finish, in an individual event so far during her career. Senior Cydney Davis finished in the top ten in the same event with a time of 1:02.77.

Next up was junior Donyae Shelton, whose time of 1:21.56, gave the Lady Hornets their second first place finish of the day.

This marks the second time Shelton finished first in an individual event, thus far in her career.

Senior Sylvia Okafor was not too far behind Shelton, Okafor’s time of 1:21.65 gave her a second-place finish. Aisa Lucas was also in the top ten in the same event with a time of 1:30.80.

Despite never running the 800 meters during her collegiate career until today, Senior Sierra Cruz finished third in the 800 meters with a recorded time of 2:34.61.

Katarzyna Rosikon placed fourth with a time of 5:40.86 in the mile run.

The third 1st place finish for the Hornets on the day, came from senior Precious Igwebuike. The veteran’s time of 9.06 seconds scored a full ten points in the 60-meter hurdles. Freshman Kiara Hameed placed fifth in her debut with a time of 9.66 seconds in the same event.

The Lady Hornets employed two 4 x 400 relay teams on Saturday. DSU’s ‘A’team of Lakendra Harpe, Donyae Shelton, Sylvia Okafor and Cydney Davis placed first with a time of 4:03.27. While the ‘B’ team of Ahnrea McCaskill, Makiya Gayles, Sierra Cruz and T’keyah Macklin crossed the finish line in 4:26.20.

Delaware State was not done yet, as they had solid ‘field’ performances throughout their season debut as well. Tiajah Robinson distance of 1.62 meters, gave her a first place finish in the High Jump. While Kiara Hameed continued her terrific collegiate debut, finishing second with 1.57 meters in the same event.  Freshman Sierra Sadler and Ahnrea McCaskill rounded out the top ten, with distances of 1.52m and 1.42m respectively.

Amber Conyers gave DSU their sixth 1st place finish on the day. The senior recorded 5.58 meters in the Long Jump. Precious Igwebuike continued her successful day, finishing second, as she was right behind Conyers with 5.57 meters. Hameed continued to show her versatility finishing in fourth with 5.19m and Tiajah Robinson was eighth at 4.91m.

Conyers recorded her second 1st place finish of the day (4th in her career). The White Plains, Maryland native had a career best 11.48 m in the Triple Jump.

The Lady Hornets are off during winter break. Their next competition will be on January 10th as they will head to New York to participate in the HBCU Battle Invitational. The invite starts at 5:00 pm
