LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Junior infielder Fiana Finau has been selected to the roster of Team Mexico by the Mexican National Softball Federation following an open tryout. Finau just completed a successful junior season where she had 55 starts for the NM State softball team.
Finau spent a week in training camp before Team Mexico traveled to Ivrine, Calif. for the USA World Cup of Softball from June 29-July 5. Mexico fell 10-6 to Japan on June 30 and dropped a 9-4 decision to Canada in the first game of a double header on July 1, but the team topped Venezuela 9-3 in the second game on Wednesday.
Team Mexico is scheduled to play Argentina at 3:00 p.m. MT on Thursday and will then face Puerto Rico at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. The team will take on the USA Junior Women at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday for their final game of the first round. The top eight seeds will advance to play on Sunday.
During the 2015 season, Finau played in 60 games and amassed a .341 batting average for the Aggies. The junior racked up 46 runs, which included a team-high 24 home runs. She also led the team with 74 RBI. Finau was selected First Team All-WAC.
