|Vandal Athletes of the Week|
MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho had another tremendous week, with a number of teams earning big conference wins. Two squads also competed at conference championships, with swimming and diving’s Janelle Lucas and track and field’s Drew Thompson earning Vandal Athletes of the Week.
Lucas took home the individual win in the platform dive at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, held in Houston last week. Lucas dominated the competition, scoring 278.00 points and winning by 32 points. Making the feat even more impressive, Idaho does not offer the platform dive, leaving Lucas very few opportunities to practice the event outside of competition. As a squad, the Vandals took fifth in the meet.
Thompson placed second in the heptathlon at the Big Sky Championships in Bozeman last week, earning eight points for the Vandals. Thompson entered the meet ranked fourth in the heptathlon, but used a personal-best performance to take second among a very challenging field. Thompson scored 5031 points, 56 points better than his previous best this season. He won the high jump and the 60-meter hurdles in the heptathlon, and took third in the 60-meter dash and the long jump. Thompson wasn’t done there, as he also scored for the Vandals in the 60-meter hurdles, taking eighth overall.
