MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho Track & Field program is ex­cited to announce the commitment of Fabian Cardenas of Umatilla High School.

Cardenas is a seven-time state cham­pion in the state of Oregon. He won the 3A/2A/1A state cross country title as a junior and senior. Cardenas won five state championships on the track, winning three in the 3000-meters and two in the 1500-meters. He won both the 1500-meters and 3000-meters as a senior, setting 3A state meet records in both; in the 1500-meters with a time of 3:58.64 and in the 3000-meters in 8:30.23.

Cardenas dominated in the 3000-meters, winning the race by 37 seconds. His time in the event was his personal best and was the 23rd fastest by a high schooler in the nation during the 2016 season. He also has personal bests of 1:57.36 in the 800-meters and 15:31 for 5000-meters in cross country. Cardenas also ran 4:14.87 for the mile at the Pasco Invitational this last season.

Cardenas intends to study exercise science with a focus on physical therapy.
