CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s tennis team will put its season on the line, as they travel to the CAA Championship tournament of Friday, April 22 to face James Madison in the first round.

The first round matchup will be played at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center/Burlington Tennis Center at Elon University in Elon, N.C.

College of Charleston (16-6) has reached the finals of the CAA Tournament for the past two years, and has received the No. 2 seed in this season’s tournament. Sophomore Juan Estevarena has a sparkling 16-5 record at No. 1 singles and has combined with Rodrigo Encinas for a 15-5 mark at the top doubles spot. CofC has won seven of its last eight matches.

The Cougars saw three of their players earn All-CAA honors this week, and will lean on them to make a third consecutive finals run this season. Juan Estevarena picked up All-CAA First team honors for his efforts in singles play, and he and Rodrigo Encinas earned All-CAA First team accolades as a doubles team. Encinas also earned a spot on the All-CAA Second team for singles play, and Zack Lewis earned a spot on the CAA All-Academic team.

James Madison owns a record of 9-11 in 2016, earning them the No. 7 seed in the CAA tournament. The Dukes have All-CAA team members as well, with Sebastian Salinas on the All-CAA Second team, and Maxi Branth/Tristan Stitt earning a spot on the All-CAA Doubles Second team. Sebastian Salinas also picked up a spot on the CAA All-Academic team.

The Cougars defeated James Madison, 7-0, in the regular season on March 13 at the CofC Tennis Courts at Patriots Point. Since joining the CAA in 2014, Charleston has faced James Madison four times, and has defeated them all four times. CofC defeated the Dukes in the first round of the CAA tournament in 2015 by a score of 4-1.

Should the Cougars defeat JMU on Friday, they would play next on Saturday, April 23 against the winner of No. 3 Elon vs. No. 6 Hofstra at 10 a.m. Charleston defeated UNCW, 4-3, in the second round of the CAA tournament in 2015 before falling to top-seeded William & Mary in the finals, 4-1.
