CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former College of Charleston All-American sailor Juan Maegli (’13) placed a career-best eighth (117 points) in the medal race of the Men’s Laser event on Tuesday at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Maegli, representing his home country of Guatemala, qualified for the medal race for the second-straight Olympic Games after finishing in the Top 10 during the 10-race series in the preliminaries. Monday’s medal race was postponed due to high wind on Guanabara Bay and moved to Tuesday.

A three-time Olympian, Maegli previously placed ninth in the medal race at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. Tom Burton (73 points) of Australia won Gold, Tonci Stipanovic (75 points) of Croatia Silver and Sam Meech (85 points) of New Zealand Bronze.

Maegli was joined in the Men’s Laser preliminaries by first-time Olympians in senior Enrique Arathoon (El Salvador) and junior Stefano Peschiera (Peru). Arathoon finished fourth and third in races 5 and 6, while Maegli reached the medal race with four Top-10 finishes.
