SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The College of Charleston sailing team finished fifth overall at the ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship held on North San Diego Bay and co-hosted by the San Diego Yacht Club and the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference.
The Cougars were one of 16 collegiate teams from across the nation to qualify for the event and compete for the national title and the Walter C. Wood Trophy. They put together a 15-7 record over the course of three days of competition and finished behind first-place Yale (21-4), second-place Georgetown (19-6), third-place St. Mary’s College of Maryland *18-7) and fourth-place Boston College (17-8).
The final day of racing on Monday began with completing the Top 8 round robin and the remaining 19 races were completed. Conditions were cloudy with light winds to start the day from the West Northwest and the winds picked up a bit in the afternoon around 12 knots under sunny skies.
CofC sailed the rotations of senior skipper Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) and junior crew Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.), senior skipper Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and senior crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.) and senior skipper Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.) and sophomore crew Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.).
“We had a solid team race season this spring,” CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. “While we hoped to better our result of fourth place in this event last year, we are proud of our efforts and sailed well to finish in the Top 5. We look forward to a strong finish this week at our final event of the season.”
CofC will close out the postseason with the ICSA Coed National Semifinal Championship on May 31-June 1 and the ICSA Gill Coed National Championship on June 2-3.
